Easter is just around the corner and it is a great time for students to take a breather before the final stretch of the academic year. Whether you are staying in Swansea over the break or heading home for a few days, here are a few useful reminders and ideas to help you make the most of the holiday.

If you are staying in your student home, this is a good moment to reset and get your space sorted before deadlines and exams begin to build up again. A quick tidy, a laundry catch up, and checking that everything in your flat is working as it should can make the next term feel a lot smoother. Easter is also a nice time to explore Swansea a little more. Buses are the lifeline for most students. First Cymru runs the majority of routes, and if you’re a student, it’s worth checking if you can get a discount on weekly or monthly passes. Routes like the 4, 5, and 6 go through all the main areas, from Uplands and Mount Pleasant to the city centre and Swansea University campus. Trains

Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!

St Davids Day is a big date in the Welsh calendar and Swansea always has a good atmosphere on the first of March. You will see daffodils everywhere, people wearing traditional Welsh colours and plenty of small celebrations across the city.

If you are new to Wales, St Davids Day is a chance to learn a bit about local culture. Many people bake or buy Welsh cakes, which you will find in most shops and cafés at this time of year. You might also notice children and students wearing a daffodil or a leek badge, which are both symbols of Wales.

Swansea usually hosts a few small events such as live music, food stalls and activities in the city centre. Even if you do not plan on joining anything officially, it is still a nice day to head out, enjoy the atmosphere and take in some Welsh traditions. The city looks great with all the yellow flowers and decorations.

If you are cooking at home, this is also a good excuse to try something Welsh such as cawl, Welsh rarebit or simply warm Welsh cakes from the bakery. They are easy, comforting and a perfect match for the colder weather.

In dire need of a cooked meal that reminds you of home? Trying to find new ways to spend time with your flatmates? Or maybe you just want to show off the cooking skills you have developed since moving out to your family groupchat. Either way, no matter the reason, here is the guide to cooking the ultimate Sunday roast for your flat.

Improving your cooking skills

Whether you’re a Gordon Ramsay in the kitchen or brewing up a pot-noodle is as far as your culinary skills reach, cooking your first ever Sunday roast can be quite the ordeal, especially if you live in a chaotic student house. But don’t stress (mainly because students will eat anything, so it’s actually not a big deal if it doesn’t turn out to be Michelin star worthy.)

Where to begin

First thing’s first, try and count how many people you are cooking for. Rounding up all of your flatmates and getting them to confirm attendance can be quite the task in itself, but will save you some effort in the longrun if you find out that only one person likes vegetables or not all ten people can make it to the meal.

It’s all in the prep

Next, it’s time to get the ingredients . If you’re cooking for the entire flat, it’s unfair for the financial burden of this to rest solely on you, so try to find a way to split the cost but make sure it’s stated from the beginning.

Cooking for a lot of people can often make you feel like you don’t have enough food for everyone, but it all goes further than you think. So the trick is not to buy too many ingredients and to plan out what you are making so you can ensure that everything is bought beforehand (there’s nothing more stressful or frustrating than running out of an essential ingredient just as you’re about to plate up!)

Peeling and chopping

If you’re cooking meat, that is usually the first item to put in the oven. Most packets say how long to cook it for, but as a general rule, a chicken needs approximately 45-50 minutes per kilogram, plus an additional 15-20 minutes at the end, at a temperature around 180°C.

When that’s in the oven you can start with preparing all the veg. Potatoes usually take the longest but remember that you will need enough time to make gravy at the end too.

Timings

To boil potatoes: 20 minutes

To cook cauliflower: 5-7 minutes

Carrots: 4-7 minutes

Broccoli: 3-5 minutes

Cabbage: 3-5 minutes

Peas: 2-4 minutes

These are just rough timings and depend on how high the heat is as well as the quantity, but if you keep an eye on them whilst cooking you can usually tell when vegetables are done by giving them a poke to see how tender they are.

What to do with leftovers

A Sunday Roast sit-down meal is a great way to spend time with your flatmates, especially around the Christmas holidays before everyone goes home.

If you overestimated how hungry you would be, you can either refrigerate a portion of Sunday lunch or freeze it. Some people also like it in a fry-up the next day. Either way it can save you some cooking time for the following week!

New Development Underway in the City Centre

Our massive 52 bedroom building is being converted!

The first of many flats in our large 52-bedroom building on St Helen’s Road is now underway. We’ve completed the first six out of sixteen flats, and you can see an example in the video above.

We’ve had this building for many years, and while it has served us well, it has definitely been in need of a full refurbishment. With the growing demand for modern, self-contained student spaces, we felt this was the perfect time to start converting the building into smaller, high-quality flats that offer more privacy and comfort.

The full building will take around another year to complete, as we still need to finish the remaining flats and redecorate the hallways and shared areas. There’s still a lot of work to do, but seeing the first finished flats come together has been a huge step forward, and we’re excited to continue the transformation.

New Development Underway in Sketty!

We are excited to share that another new development is now underway in Sketty. This project will bring a selection of modern one and two bedroom student homes, designed with comfortable living and ease of access in mind.

Sketty is already a popular area for students, and this development sits right in the centre of it. You will have a whole row of shops, cafés, takeaways and everyday essentials right on your doorstep, which makes day-to-day life really easy. Whether you want to grab a quick coffee, pick up groceries or meet a friend for food, everything is close by.

The location also offers great access to Singleton Campus. It’s easy to get to on foot or by bus, so the new homes are ideal for students who want the convenience of being near University while still enjoying a friendly neighbourhood feel.

The properties are due to be ready by June and will be available to let for the next academic year, perfect for anyone planning ahead for September.

Halloween is nearly here and it’s always a good time to add a little spooky fun to your day, whether you’re hanging out with friends, getting your place ready, or just enjoying the autumn vibes. Before you dive into the celebrations, we thought it would be cool to share some interesting things about Halloween in the UK and some local Swansea stories to get you in the mood.

Halloween actually has really old roots here in the UK. It goes back to an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain. People used to celebrate the end of the harvest season and the start of the cold, dark winter. Back then, they believed that the boundary between the living world and the spirit world was thinner around this time of year. Because of that, they thought ghosts and spirits could cross over and roam the earth. It was a time to light bonfires and wear costumes to keep those spirits away.

The pumpkin carving tradition that’s so popular today actually started a little differently. In Ireland and Scotland, people used to carve faces into turnips or other root vegetables to scare off wandering spirits. When Irish immigrants came to America, they discovered pumpkins were easier to carve and much bigger, so the jack-o’-lantern as we know it was born. But if you want to keep it authentic, you could always try carving a turnip this Halloween.

Trick or treating is another interesting tradition. It didn’t really become popular in the UK until the 1980s. Before that, kids went “guising” which meant dressing up in costumes and going door to door to perform songs or jokes in exchange for treats. It was less about threats and more about entertainment. The decorations are down, the group chats are back in action, and the first week of exams is creeping in... which can only mean one thing: a brand-new year has begun.

If you’re renting with us this year, you’ll probably get to know one of our Property Managers, Lisa Bartlett. She is the person who makes sure everything in your student home runs smoothly from the moment you move in right through to the day you move out.

Lisa has been working in student lettings for quite a few years now. Over that time, she’s become really familiar with what it’s like to live in Swansea as a student and all the little things that can pop up during the year. Whether it’s a dripping tap that won’t quit, a broken boiler in the middle of winter, or questions about your tenancy, Lisa knows how to keep things calm and get it sorted quickly.

She works closely with landlords and maintenance teams to make sure any problems are fixed as soon as possible. If you ever need to report something or just want some advice about your house, Lisa is your go-to person. She’s patient, approachable, and understands that sometimes living away from home can throw up challenges.

Outside of work, Lisa enjoys spending time with friends and family and is a bit of a coffee enthusiast. When she is not helping students, you might find her planning her next trip or exploring new cafés around Swansea!

Uplands or Brynmill? Let us explain the differences!

If you are looking for a student house in Swansea, there is a good chance you will end up in either Uplands or Brynmill. They are the two most popular areas for students and for good reason, but they each offer something a little different.

We’ve got homes in both, so here’s a bit of a breakdown to help you figure out which one might suit you best.

Uplands – A Bit More Buzz
Uplands is a lively little hub just up the hill from the beach and city centre. It’s known for its cool cafes, independent bars, takeaways and regular events like the Uplands Market. There is a strong community feel, and it has got that slightly artsy, laid-back vibe that makes it really popular with students who enjoy being around a bit of culture and a good flat white.

You will find loads of places to grab brunch, meet friends for a drink or just hang out with your laptop in a coffee shop. It’s also home to a few hidden gem pubs and some great food spots that are open late. There is something for everyone whether you into live music, themed quiz nights or a quiet drink, Uplands tends to be where a lot of social life happens outside the city centre.

It is a little further away from Singleton Campus - usually around a 20 to 25 minute walk depending on where you are based. It’s also popular with postgrads, med students and those based at Singleton Hospital or Swansea Uni’s medical school, so you will often find a slightly more mixed crowd.

Brynmill – The Classic Student Choice
Brynmill is where a lot of students naturally gravitate to, especially in second and third year. It’s much closer to Singleton Campus depending on the street, you might only be five or ten minutes away, which makes it a great choice if you don’t want to spend the morning rushing out the door.

The area is packed with student houses, corner shops, cafes and takeaways, and there is always someone about. It’s a bit quieter than Uplands in terms of nightlife, but still has everything you need on your doorstep and Uplands is only a short walk away. It’s also just a short walk to Singleton Park and Swansea Bay, which means you have got easy access to green space and the beach for chilled walks, BBQs or just some time out from studying.

There are a lot more students in Brynmill compared to Uplands and it is a great pick if you want convenience, a strong student community and the ability to pop home between lectures. It’s also slightly flatter than Uplands, so if hills aren’t your thing, this might be something to think about.

So, which one should you pick?
Both areas are great in their own way, and we have got properties in each depending on what you are looking for. If your course is based at Singleton Campus and you want short commutes, Brynmill is super handy. It’s student-heavy, right near the action, and ideal for getting to uni without much effort.

If you would prefer to be a bit closer to the action outside of uni, like bars, cafes and markets, Uplands might be more your scene. It’s got a bit more of a buzz and feels a bit more grown-up, while still being packed with students.

In the end, it depends on your lifestyle. Both areas offer a great student experience, plenty of options for food and fun, and a strong community of other students living nearby.

We know it might feel early to be thinking about next year’s accommodation when you’ve only just settled in for this year, but trust us, this is the best time to get ahead. Earlybird access means you’ll get a private look at our available student houses before they’re released to the public. You’ll be able to browse the list early, register interest, and be first to view the properties when they go live.

It’s a relaxed way to get ahead, with no rush and no pressure - just a chance to find the right place for you and your housemates while the best spots are still available.

Even if you haven’t finalised who you’re living with yet, having a look early gives you time to plan and figure it out without the last-minute stress.

Our new re-development of a few flats in our biggest student building are complete!

We’ve just completed a new phase of work at one of our biggest student buildings: 160 St Helen’s Road, right in the heart of Swansea City Centre.

This 52-bedroom building has always been one of our most popular locations, and we’ve recently expanded the offering with the addition of two brand new studio flats and a modern two-bedroom flat, now available for the first time.

The new flats have been created by reworking some of the existing space within the building. Each one has been fully renovated from scratch, with completely new layouts, modern kitchens and bathrooms, and a clean, stylish finish throughout. Like the rest of the building, these flats are purpose-built for students - but offer a bit more privacy and comfort for those looking for something more self-contained.

Being in the city centre, 160 St Helen’s Road is ideal for students who want to be close to everything such as: shops, cafes, gyms, bars, transport, and the beach are all just a few minutes’ walk away. It’s also an easy commute to both Singleton and Bay Campus, with frequent bus routes right outside the front door.

The new studios are perfect for those who want their own space, while the two-bed flat is a great option for two friends sharing, without having to compromise on location or quality.

We've been working on some new flats!

We’re excited to share that the redevelopment of 17 Bryn Road is now finished.
This project involved taking what was originally a large 7-bedroom house and completely reworking the layout. We’ve now split the property into three self-contained studio flats and a modern three-bedroom flat, all designed with student living in mind.

Every part of the building has been stripped back and redone. As part of the renovation, we reconfigured the internal layout to make the space work better for individual and group living. Alongside this, we fitted brand new kitchens, bathrooms, and modern finishes throughout - everything is fresh, clean, and purpose-built to a high standard.

The studio flats are great for students who want their own private space, while the three-bed flat is ideal for a small group of friends looking to live together in a more modern setup than a typical shared house.

Located on Bryn Road in Brynmill, the property is in a prime student area close to both the University, beach, Uplands and the city, with local shops, cafés, and parks just around the corner.

While most of your food will live in the kitchen, there’s always a special stash that’s too precious to risk leaving out in the open. Whatever it is, keeping it safe in your bedroom becomes second nature when you’ve experienced the heartbreak of coming home to find your favourite snacks mysteriously “borrowed.”

We’re actively working on acquiring new properties across Swansea to provide more options for students, especially in key areas close to Swansea University and other local amenities.
Re-developments - as part of our expansion, we’re converting larger properties into more modern, comfortable living spaces that cater to the growing demand for high-quality student accommodation. We’re always on the lookout for opportunities to turn some of our properties that require a refurbishment into even better properties.
Diverse offerings - aur aim is to offer a variety of accommodation types, from shared houses to individual studios, ensuring there’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a quiet space to focus on your studies or a social environment to meet new friends.
Embracing sustainability - sustainability is more important than ever, and Digs Swansea is committed to making our properties greener and more environmentally friendly. We’re already working on a number of initiatives to reduce our environmental impact and help students live more sustainably, such as upgrading some properties to better energy efficiency, starting a tree planting scheme and looking at sustainable materials.
Innovative technology integration - we currently already have a partnership with an excellent company for our technology services. For example, we use Arthur as an all in one application for students to manage their tenancy, chat with us, view any documents for their property, raise problems, see when bills are due and much more. We're now looking to further this will re-developments with our other online platforms.
Enhanced student experience - we understand that student accommodation isn’t just about having a place to live, it’s about creating a community and supporting students throughout their time in Swansea, ensuring they have a smooth and enjoyable experience with us. Our vision for the future includes enhancing the student experience in a variety of ways. We currently have a robust system of working for tenants, but we now have employed another staff member to help us! We are getting feedback to see where we can improve and are looking for ways we can move forward to ensure we continually provide the excellent experience that our tenants have with us. Our service aims to provide a personalised experience for tenants, tailoring our services to meet individual needs.

At Digs Swansea, we aim to make the process of finding and securing your student accommodation as straightforward and stress-free as possible. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the journey of letting a student property with us for the 2025/26 Academic Year.
Step 1: Explore Our Properties
Start by browsing through our extensive range of student properties on our website. Take note of the ones that catch your eye. When you’ve shortlisted your favorites, email us to book in your viewings. Seeing the properties in person will give you a better feel of the place and help you make an informed decision.
Step 2: Notify Us of Your Choice
After attending the viewings and selecting the property that suits you best, notify us via email that you wish to proceed. This step ensures that your preferred property is reserved for you and initiates the formal application process.
Step 3: Complete the Property Application
We will send out a property application form to each person who will be living in the property. It’s important that all prospective tenants complete and return these forms promptly to avoid any delays.
Step 4: Tenancy Agreement Creation
Once we receive all the completed application forms, one of our experienced Lettings Managers will create a tenancy agreement. This document outlines the terms and conditions of your tenancy.
Step 5: Review the Tenancy Agreement
We will email the tenancy agreement to you for review. Take the time to read through it carefully. If you have any questions or concerns about the terms, our Lettings Managers are available to provide clarification and ensure you are comfortable with the agreement.
Step 6: Sign the Tenancy Agreement
If you are satisfied with the tenancy agreement, you can proceed to sign it. This officially secures the property for you and your housemates for the next academic year.
Step 7: Arrange for the Deposit
After signing the agreement, a deposit equivalent to five weeks' rent is required. Our accounts team will reach out to you to arrange the payment. This deposit is held securely and is refundable at the end of your tenancy, subject to the terms outlined in the agreement.
Step 8: Guarantor Form Completion
The next step is to have your guarantor fill in the guarantor form. A guarantor, usually a parent or guardian, is someone who agrees to cover your rent if you are unable to pay. This form is a standard requirement to ensure financial security for the tenancy.
Step 9: Move In!
Once all the previous steps are completed – from the signing of the tenancy agreement and payment of the deposit to the submission of the guarantor form – your property is ready for the next academic year and you can prepare for an exciting academic year in your new home.

When Should I Start Looking for a Student House for the Next Academic Year?

One of the big questions we get asked is “when should I look for student accommodation?”.
There is no “right” time to start looking for student accommodation, however there are pivotal months of the year where it is the best period to secure your property. October, November and December in Swansea is the 'peak' of the letting season for the next academic year, our advice is to look during this period. By January, usually more than 50% of the properties available for the next Academic Year in Swansea have sold, therefore there is reduced choice to choose from.
- October: This may sound early - after all, most students only just started their course in September, but it’s a good idea to start putting the feelers out and discussing with potential flat/house mates what their plans are for the next academic year. Talking to other first or second year students can really help set the ball rolling and impact your decisions on what type of accommodation you are looking for. We start letting on October 1st eveey year! So if you’re looking to secure your house or flat early, October is the perfect time for you!
- January: After the hype of Christmas it’s nice to get your house sorted. By this time of the academic year, hopefully you have a good idea of the type of accommodation you’re looking for and who you want to live with. If you’re still trying to figure this out, January is the best month to try and finalise these points. At this stage there should still be plenty of housing options for you to choose from, and hopefully there’s enough students in the same boat as you, so finding people to live with (that you know and like) should still be relatively easy.
- March onwards: In Swansea by March and onwards can be viewed as “late” in terms of your search. Some providers may already be sold out of the majority of rooms, but will still have a few options for you to choose from up until May. The longer you leave it after May, the less options you’re likely to be left with.

From seaside promenades, to rocky cliffs, Swansea has some of the most beautiful walking routes to take full advantage of this summer. It goes without saying that Welsh scenery is nothing short of breathtaking and incredibly unique. You could be walking through a leafy woodland one minute and find yourself perched on a picture perfect cliff the next, all within a 2 mile walk.

Swansea Promenade - those familiar with Swansea Bay promenade walk will know the bustle and buzz that comes with the walk from Swansea to Mumbles when the sun is out. Offering views across Swansea Bay and Mumbles pier, it's definitely one of the most popular. The walk passes local landmarks such as the Guildhall, the Patti Pavilion, Singleton Park and Clyne Gardens.
Three Walks in Llanrhidian - this route offers 3 different routes to explore the North Gower Countryside by foot. The longer walk for those looking for a challenge is 8 miles, from Llanrhidian to Cheriton.
Oxwich Point Walk, Gower - Part of the Gower coast path, the 3-4 mile walk through headlands, woodlands, and limestone cliffs leads to 16th century Oxwich Castle. Although on uneven ground, with a flight of stairs, the hard work is worth it, with about a mile of the route on a coastal path right by the sea, where you can expect picturesque views.
Langland Bay to Caswell Bay - an easy, circular, 2 mile route is one for all the family. But its simplicity is not to be mistaken. The views on offer of both Caswell and Langland Bay are outstanding. The path consists of a coastal path and a short flight of stairs.
Rhossili Bay to Mewslade - undeniably one of the most beautiful walks in Wales, the Rhossili to Mewslade path is a conveniently easy, 3 mile, circular walk that ends with a spectacular view of the internationally renowned Rhossili Bay. The circular walk at the western edge of the Gower Peninsula consists of grassy paths, clifftops, field paths and lanes, including Worms Head, and is suitable for all abilities. The last leg leads to sand and sea, perfect for those wishing to end their walk with a dip in the beautiful blue waters.
Cwm Clydach, Clydach - this route is definitely one for those searching for scenic views. The peaceful 9 mile walk through unspoilt common land and woodland offers views towards the Brecon Beacons. It travels alongside the Lower Clydach River with remains of mines and tramways from the former coal mining valley visible.
Penmaen to Three Cliffs Bay - at 1.7 miles, this route ins on the shorter side, but not any less worthwhile.The route, which has some fairly rough patches, consists of a path through a woodlands area, and a coastal walk. On your trek, be sure to spot a WW2 bunker and the historical Pennard Castle at the top of the valley before arriving at the lovely Golden sands at Thee Cliffs.
Gowerton to Penlle’r Castell Heritage Trial - the most strenuous on our list, this linear path is one for those wanting a challenge and probably one for the more experienced walkers, due to its length. Starting deep within woodlands, the route goes through fields and pastures, running north-east from Gowerton Valley to the historic ruined fort of Penlle’r Castell which sits on the summit of Mynydd y Betws.
Bishopston Valley and Pwll Du Bay - the path combines the natural beauty of Bishopston Valley’s moss strewn woodlands, steep sided river valley, and one of Gower’s secluded beaches - making it one of the most interesting walking routes on the list.
Llanmadoc Walk, Gower - this pretty 2 mile route passes through the Old Rectory before continuing through Whiteford Woods. Abundant with historic landmarks, the path allows you to experience the Whiteford Burrows Nature Reserve, the 13th century Llanmadoc Church and a breathtaking view over the Loughor Estuary.

Whether you're clubbing every week, or just going to a pub with friends, nights out can be a big part of student life.
When you go out, there are a few things you should think about so you can make the most of your nights out at uni and stay safe, especially if alcohol's involved.
Before you leave
Where you're going, what's playing and who you'll meet are probably some of your top thoughts when you're getting ready. But there are couple things you should do before you're out the door so you're set to have a good night:

Make sure you've charged your phone before you leave
If you plan on carrying cash, go to the cash-point during the day and avoid using them at night
Put your keys, ID and other valuables somewhere you won't lose them
Don't keep your wallet in your back pocket
If you've brought a bag don't leave it unattended when you're out

If you're meeting up at a friend's place first for pre-drinks, be cautious about how much you drink. Drinking alcohol in moderation is fine. But while under the influence of alcohol you can make yourself vulnerable and more likely to be a victim of crime.
Also be wary of inviting strangers to your home for pre-drinks (or at the end of the night). Remember, too much alcohol affects your normal everyday decisions which can put you at risk or into trouble.
Stay with friends
It might seem obvious, but sticking with your mates in a packed bar can be trickier than it looks. Here's some advice to help you and your friends connected:

Use licensed cabs and pre-book your journey to town and back home
Tell your friends where you're going before you head off to the loo or the bar
Take someone with you when you split from your group of friends
Have a groupchat with your mates so you can stay in touch throughout the night if one of you goes to the bar
If you notice you haven't seen a friend for a while, send them a message in the group chat
Head home together and make sure everyone knows how and when each of you are getting home

Drink safety
Odds are you or some of your friends will be drinking. Having a couple drinks throughout the night isn't a worry. But overdoing it on the beers or smashing tons of shots isn't safe.
Here are a few tips when it comes to drinking safely:

Eat before you drink so your body can better process your drinks – alcohol on an empty stomach will have you over the toilet in no time

Avoid drinking and swimming – alcohol numbs your senses and can make it more difficult to get yourself out of trouble
No "minesweeping" – collecting unattended or near empty drinks just because you're dry – you don't know what's in those drinks or who's mouth has been on it
As a whole, drugs consumed in a drink or otherwise isn't safe – you should never consume an unknown substance (whether its food a drink or a drug) as the consequences of doing so could be life threatening

Drink spiking
While it's extremely rare, there is unfortunately a risk of drink spiking when you're out. So always keep your eye on your drink and don't leave it unattended. If you need to go to the loo, ask your friends to watch your drink.
If you suspect yours or someone else's drink has been spiked, immediately find a safe spot, notify venue staff and get some water. Staff will be able to offer help and safety and potentially locate the person who spiked your drink.
Respecting others
A few drinks will affect your decision-making and perception skills. What you want may not be what someone else wants. Everyone deserves to have their boundaries respected, and there are some simple rules to live by:

Always treat everyone you meet with respect
Be conscious of how people respond to you on a night out – if someone doesn't want to talk to you or you're making them uncomfortable take the hint and leave them alone
It doesn't matter how much you or others have had to drink, never touch someone without their consent

If you or someone you know has been treated inappropriately, try to diffuse the situation and move the people involved to safety. Avoid situations that have become hostile always walk away — this de-escalates the situation and keeps you safe.
If you continue to feel unsafe you can always let venue staff know and they can help you as best they can.
Getting home safe
How you get home might be one of the last things you think about when planning a night out. It's good to plan your journey home, or have a couple of options in mind depending on where the night takes you.
If you've met someone on your night out, think about the risks of inviting them back to your place or staying at theirs. Make sure you're confident that you'll be safe and have a way of getting home afterwards.
Getting a cab or bus home is safer than walking, so make sure you have money to get home. Areas around university campuses generally have good transport networks so you should figure out what works best for you. Never accept a lift from a stranger. If you become a victim of crime, report to the Police or University Security immediately.
Walking home safely
We wouldn't recommend getting home on foot, even if it's only a short distance. But if you're set on walking home there are steps you can take to make sure you arrive safely:

Don't walk alone
Stick to open, well lit areas and walk with purpose
Walk on the oncoming traffic side of the pavement so you're fully aware if a car stops near you
Call and chat to a friend while you're walking home alone
Carry a personal attack alarm for emergencies

If you think you're being followed, cross the road and see if you're still followed. Try and stop at a busy area like a petrol station, pub or takeaway, and phone the police.

End of Tenancy Cleaning Guide

Digs Swansea provide these notes as a guide to help you understand our cleaning expectations when you move out, so that you can meet the terms and conditions of your tenancy and to ensure the return of your deposit at the end of your tenancy period.
The kitchen

The cooker , including the oven is clean and has all its attachments (particularly any grill pan provided).
The fridge/freezer is empty, the freezer has been defrosted, all shelves are clean and it has been switched off with the door left open. Don't forget to clean behind it.
All surfaces and the floor in the kitchen are clean and stain free and the bins are emptied and clean.
All the cupboards are empty of goods and wiped clean.
All walls, windows and windowsills are clean and stain free.
If crockery and cutlery has been provided, ensure any breakages have been replaced.

Lounge, passageways and communal living areas

Lounge, passageways, communal areas should be vacuumed, clean and stain-free.
All rubbish is bagged and removed.

External areas

All rubbish has been removed and no rubbish is left unbagged in the yard/garden/corridors/lane/sheds or storage areas.
The balconies/yard/garden are clear of rubbish and clean and tidy.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms should be vacuumed (including under/behind the bed and behind the wardrobe and in the drawers)
All personal possessions have been removed.
All posters and blu-tack or sellotape & marks have been removed.
All rubbish is removed.
All furniture that was in the room at the beginning of the tenancy has been put back.
The blinds and curtains are hung properly on their hooks.
Paint work and windowsills have been wiped clean.
Wardrobes and chests are empty and polished.

Bathroom and separate toilets

The toilet, sink and shower have been cleaned.
All others surfaces are clean, including the floor.
All toiletries have been removed and all bins emptied.

Inventory and moving in arrangements We endeavor to ensure that all properties are handed over in a clean/tidy condition at the start of tenancy. However, please be aware that in most cases previous tenants may only have vacated on 30th June and therefore tenants wishing to move in on or around the 1st July may have cleaning and necessary maintenance being carried out around them.
Services available We can arrange for your flat to be cleaned at the end of your tenancy. We will charge for this and for any painting that may be required. These sums will be deducted from your deposits, as will any others identified at the final inspection. For a list of our current rates for cleaning, please go to the contact form and we will get straight back to you.
Damage to the property includes breakages, burns and residue from smoking. Please note: a deep clean will be required if tenants have been smoking in the accommodation. For more information, please feel free to ask.

Whether you’re an avid walker, keen to try glamping for the first time, live for surfing or are simply a sucker for relaxing on the beach, you can do it all in Swansea Bay. Here are some things you can do in Swansea Bay, Mumbles and Gower this summer!
1. Discover one of Britain's best beaches, Rhossili Bay
Build a sandcastle, try your hand at kayaking or coasteering, or just sit, relax and take in the breath-taking views of Rhossili Bay. With three miles of unspoilt sand and sea, you’ll quickly understand why Rhossili Bay has been included within Britain’s top ten beaches round-up for six consecutive years (as voted for in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards). Rhossili sits at the westernmost point of the Gower Peninsula, which was itself the first place in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
2. Hit the waves
Swansea Bay is known for its abundance of beautiful beaches, perfect for donning a wetsuit and trying your hand at surfing. Head to Caswell Bay to find Gower Surfing, a fully licensed surf school in Swansea Bay, which offers group lessons or one-to-one teaching, to suit all levels of abilities. Of course, if surfing isn’t for you then Swansea Bay is well-equipped with a variety of other activities including stand-up paddle boarding, sea kayaking and kitesurfing.
3. Walk the Welsh coastline
With a path that wraps around the entire coastal border of Wales, it’s fair to say the walking routes in Gower and Swansea Bay are not to be missed. With a range of distances and a mix of terrains, Swansea Bay walking routes offer a little bit of everything from clifftops, sandy beaches, waterfront and woodland. For a variety of sceneries, try the Oxwich Point walk which will take you along one of Gower’s most dramatic headlands, through sunlight dappled woods and across wild open cliffs, ranging between 3.5 miles to 4.5 miles in distance…depending on how energetic you’re feeling!
4. Make a day of it in Mumbles
Mumbles is a cosy and cosmopolitan coastal town, recognised as one of Dylan Thomas’ many stomping grounds and considered the gateway to Gower. There is so much to see and do in Mumbles it’s easy to spend a day exploring here – you’ll find independent boutiques and quirky galleries, picturesque walking and cycling routes along the promenade and lots of great places for a bite to eat including Bistrot Pierre.
5. Indulge in a world-class ice cream
Swansea Bay has a reputation for founding incredible ice cream producers, one of which being Verdi’s, located at the end of the Mumbles promenade overlooking Swansea Bay. Try one of their ice cream sundaes – you won’t regret it.
6. Take a tour of Oystermouth Castle
Oystermouth Castle sits majestically on a hill in Mumbles, boasting sweeping and spectacular views of Swansea Bay. With an exciting history, Oystermouth Castle includes ancient graffiti art from the 14th century, a medieval maze of deep vaults and secret staircases, as well as a 30-foot-high glass bridge.
7. Go on a foodie tour of Swansea Bay
Visitors to Swansea Bay will quite simply be spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out in the area. Swansea Bay boasts a range of historical pubs such as Reynoldston’s King Arthur Hotel and Llangennith’s Kings’ Head, both serving classic and seasonal dishes with produce sourced locally. But for restaurant food with a side of 360-degree views of Swansea Bay, head to the Grape & Olive which can be found at the top of the Meridian Tower in Swansea. With floor to ceiling glass windows, this restaurant offers much more than great food and on a clear day you’ll have views right across the bay.
8. Experience Wales' largest waterpark
If the weather isn’t on your side (let’s face it, we can’t always rely on British weather even in the summer) or you’re looking for a day out with family, Wales’ largest waterpark LC2 based in the heart of Swansea features an exciting network of pools, rides and slides under one roof. From wave pools, rollercoaster slides to surf simulators, the LC2 is guaranteed to keep the family entertained for hours. Of course, if it’s relaxation you’re after, head to the luxury spa to unwind in the sauna and steam room.
9. Step into the life and times of Swansea’s most famous son, Dylan Thomas
You haven’t experienced the cultural offering of Swansea Bay until you’ve learnt about playwright and poet Dylan Thomas, arguably the region’s most famous export. Have a tour and stay overnight in Dylan’s birthplace, 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, fully restored to its 1914 condition. Immerse yourself in Dylan’s early life in the house where one of the most celebrated poets and writers of the 20th century was born, spent the first 23 years of his life and first put pen to paper.

What is a Guarantor for Student Housing?

What is a gaurantor and why do I need one?

The term “guarantor” may something you have heard quite a lot when looking for student accommodation.
What exactly is a guarantor and what do they do?
A guarantor is something that most student accommodations ask for from their prospective tenants. Both landlords and agents will double check that you can provide the details for your guarantor before you check in.
But what exactly is one?
In simple terms, a guarantor is someone who you nominate (and they agree to it) to be the backup for your payments. This means if you miss a payment or can no longer afford it, the rent charges will become the guarantor’s responsibility and your landlord may start chasing them for the money instead of you. The guarantor will sign a legally binding document, called the ‘guarantee agreement’ and return it to the landlord or agent before you move in to confirm they’re responsible for any missed or late rent payments.
Who can be a guarantor?
You will need to check with your specific accommodation provider to see who they’ll accept. Most landlords accept international as well as UK guarantors, but there may be some exceptions. The person who you nominate will need to be over the age of 18 and be in full time employment or be a homeowner. They’ll also be required to provide a valid ID and proof of address, along with the signed contract before they’re accepted as your guarantor. In some cases, a credit check will be performed on the guarantor so that the accommodation provider can double check they have the means to pay if you cannot.
Who needs a guarantor?
This will most likely be stated in your tenancy agreement or the guarantor document which is sent to you from your student accommodation. However, typically every student will need someone to act as a guarantor on their behalf if they’re paying monthly rent or termly rent. If you choose to pay annually, a guarantor may not be needed as the money is paid upfront, meaning you’re less likely to miss any payments (providing you pay the initial annual payment of course!). Both UK and international students will require a guarantor, but as mentioned, please check with your individual accommodation provider to see if you’ll need a guarantor who currently lives within the UK or not.
What if I can’t find a guarantor?
If you don’t have anyone who could be your guarantor, but you still need one for your accommodation (as you cannot afford to pay annually), there are companies who will act as your guarantor such as Housing Hand. These do charge for their services and will run a credit check to ensure you have the funds to pay for your accommodation. This could be a feasible option if your landlord is requesting that you must have a guarantor. Companies such as UK Guarantor are a great place to look if you’re struggling to locate your own.

It’s always worth considering your campus commute when viewing a property. You might fall in love with a house the minute you walk in, but that feeling can quickly turn bittersweet when you realise that the transport links are poor, especially when those harsh winter mornings begin to roll in.

Scope the local area

Regardless of how perfect a property might seem, it’s important to find out if the surrounding areas are up to the same standard. What's the neighbourhood like? Is there a decent supermarket close by? Are there nice places to eat and drink within walking distance? It’s a good idea to get off the bus a stop early so you can take a walk around and get a feel for the area and the local amenities.

St. David's Day, known as Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant in Welsh, is a significant celebration in Wales that occurs on the 1st of March each year. This cultural holiday honors the country's patron saint, St. David, who played a pivotal role in spreading Christianity in Wales during the 6th century. As a Graduate School student, I will delve into the history, traditions, symbols, and festivities associated with St. David's Day, providing a comprehensive understanding of this important Welsh holiday.
Firstly, the origins of St. David's Day can be traced back to the life and achievements of St. David, or Dewi Sant in Welsh. He was born in the mid-6th century and founded a Celtic monastic community in what is now known as St. Davids, Pembrokeshire. St. David's influence on Christianity in Wales was considerable, and his teachings on simplicity, purity, and modesty resonated with the Welsh people. This led to his canonization in the 12th century and the subsequent establishment of St. David's Day as a recognized holiday.
On St. David's Day, the Welsh people proudly display their national identity and rich cultural heritage. One of the most prominent symbols associated with this celebration is the daffodil, or Cenhinen Bedr in Welsh. As the story goes, this Valentine defied Emperor Claudius II's ban on marriage (he thought it distracted young soldiers), illegally marrying couples in the spirit of love until he was caught and sentenced to death. Another legend suggests that Valentine was killed for attempting to help Christians escape prison in Rome, and that he actually sent the first "valentine" message himself while imprisoned, writing a letter signed "From your Valentine."
2. The first valentine was sent in the 15th century.
The oldest record of a valentine being sent, according to History.com , was a poem written by a French medieval duke named Charles to his wife in 1415. Charles penned this sweet note to his lover while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London at just 21 years old. One of the lines in the poem? "I am already sick of love, My very gentle Valentine." Swoon!
3. Not until the 1840s did we get the first mass-produced valentines.
People started exchanging cards and handwritten letters to both lovers and friends during the 17th century, but it was in the 1840s that the first Valentine's Day cards were mass-produced in the U.S., sold by Esther A. Howland. Known as the " Mother of the American Valentine ," Howland is credited with commercializing Valentine's Day cards in America, and she is remembered for her elaborate, crafty cards made with lace and ribbons.
4. Nearly 850 million roses are grown in preparation for Valentine's Day each year.
There is a science to ensuring that there are enough fresh roses to go around when it comes to February 14. In an effort to provide the flowers for the holiday, countries including Ecuador, Kenya, or Columbia ship the roses to other countries, since they do not grow in the colder temperatures we experience in February.
5. The Valentine's Day gift that people spend the most on is jewelry.
Chocolate and flowers might be some of the most common gifts for Valentine's Day, but according to the National Retail Federation, the category that we typically spend the most on for February 14 is jewelry, at a whopping £2.8 billion in 2021! The second most-paid-for gift on Valentine's Day 2020 was an evening out with £2.3 billion, followed by clothing, candy and then flowers.
6. Nearly 6 million couples get engaged on Valentine's Day.
I mean, what better day is there for a marriage proposal than a day literally dedicated to love and romance? Valentine's Day is one of the popular days to pop the question, with as many as 6 million couples getting engaged on February 14 across the world!

The Digs Team would like to wish all our tenants a Happy Guy Fawkes Night!
Here are some interesting facts about Guy Fawkes night:
1 – Bonfire night is also known as Guy Fawkes Night. It is celebrated on the 5th of November because Guy Fawkes was caught in a gunpowder plot underneath Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder.
2 – In Britain, it was once illegal not to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night. This was until 1959 when the rule was scrapped.
3 – During the war, no one was allowed to set off fireworks or light bonfires. This is because it would show the enemies where they were. However, was it was illegal not to celebrate, people had to celebrate indoors.
4 – Fireworks were invented by accident in China. A chef mixed charcoal, sulfur and saltpeter together, it burned in a bamboo tube and exploded.
5 – St Peters School is the only school in the UK not to celebrate bonfire night in respect for their former pupil Guy Fawkes.

We hope everyone has a spooky evening! Below we have listed some fun facts about Halloween:
1) The origins of Halloween began 2,000 years ago
The first Halloween celebrations can be traced back to the ancient Celts who lived in the area now occupied by Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, and celebrated a festival called Samhain on October 31st.
2) You’ve been spelling Halloween wrong!
Don’t worry I have too! Although Halloween is now the accepted spelling the correct way is actually Hallowe’en. Halloween derives from All Hallows Eve which is why the correct spelling has an apostrophe in it.
3) A full moon on Halloween is extremely rare
Halloween photos usually depict a full moon that is beaming, but a full moon occurring on Halloween only occurs three or four times every century. On average, the moon is full every 19 years on Halloween, with the last occurrence in 2020! So, unfortunately, we could be waiting a while for the next one.
4)Trick -or-treating has been around for a long time
The roots of trick-or-treating date back to the Samhain festival, where people would prepare banquet tables with food left out to placate unwelcome spirits.In later centuries, people began to perform antics in exchange for food and drink. This custom dates back to the Middle Ages and is thought to be an antecedent of trick-or-treating. By the 19th century, trick-or-treating got a little adventurous; trick-or-treaters would do doorstep performances of dancing, singing and telling jokes for their treat, a tradition known as mumming.
5) S amhainophobia is the fear of Halloween
Samhainophobia is a term rooted in ancient pagan traditions, defined as an unwarranted fear of Halloween!
6) Wh ile pumpkins are typically orange, they can also be green, white, red and blue
One of the first signs of Autumn you will notice is when orange pumpkins line the shelves of supermarkets or Instagram is full pumpkin picking pictures! However, did you know that there are several other pumpkin colours to enjoy including white pumpkins, yellow pumpkins and even blue!
7) Bla ck and orange are typically associated with Halloween
Whilst this Halloween fact may not come as a surprise, did you know the significance of the two colours? It is said that orange is the symbol of strength and endurance, as well as representing autumn, whilst black represents the cold and dark winter and as a symbol of death, acting as a reminder that Halloween once was a festival that celebrated the spirits of the dead.

Swansea Airshow will take place on 1 and 2 July 2023, located right next to our Digs office! Many of our tenants on Bryn Road will be able to see the show from the property windows!
Swansea Airshow is a brilliant weekend with hundreds of thousands of people enjoying the country’s biggest Airshow. There will be two days of flying featuring The Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and many other displays delighted visitors from across the UK. It is a fantastic weekend for Swansea The Airshow contributes millions of pounds to local businesses and the local economy.
No tickets are needed, the Airshow is completely free!

The End of the 2022/23 Academic Year!

Another Academic Year has finished! The sun is shining and the weather is finally warmer.
The Digs Swansea team want to wish all our tenants who are leaving us this year the best of luck for the future! Each year, hundreds of students live in our properties, we are lucky to have such positive relationships with our tenants.
Tenancies expire on the June 30th and properties must be vacated by 10am, unless the tenancy has been extended. Please make sure to follow our property cleaning guide, to see what you are expected to do before you leave.
If anyone is looking for accommodation for the 2024-25 Academic Year, viewings will be available from October!
The Digs Swansea team look forward to moving in our new tenants and catching up with those who have extended tenancies.

Our Tree Planting Scheme

Here at Digs Swansea always are trying to do our part to help the planet. Since 2021, we started a scheme where every time we let a property, a tree gets planted. So far, we have paid to plant more than 300+ trees in countries such as Madagascar and Nepal. We are already trying to reduce our environmental impact, and are proud of the number of properties we have with solar panels as well as the amazing effort made by our tenants with recycling, but we still wanted to do more.
We are determined to get as many trees planted as possible and here is why: - They benefit the environment by providing homes for various forms of life, cooling our climate, and improving our soil. - Not only do they benefit the environment, but us humans to! They purify water, the air and create better social condition. - Not to mention they make the world a beautiful scenic place.
We know we aren't perfect, but we firmly believe that every little helps when it comes to making the world a better place!

Making the Most of Your Time

One of the aims for many students is to achieve better time management so that they can complete all their assignments on time, study for exams and live the whole student experience in full.
However, there are many obstacles to successful time management and these include:

Mobile technology – all the myriad forms that need my constant attention and involvement
Social networking – as above
Watching entire TV series – because unless I know what happened in xxxxx I cannot participate in the above
Daydreaming. - spending a lot of time thinking about things but not really doing anything. It’s not really wasting time, though.. it’s fostering creativity.

So it might be obvious but the first step to better time management is actually to spend less time on any of the above. But what are the next steps?

Prioritising

It is important to learn to prioritize by balancing what needs to be done soon with what might need the most investment in terms of time, effort and energy. It seems obvious but keep a diary to make a note of dates of tests, project and assignment deadlines. Once you have created a list of your priorities you can timetable.

Timetabling

You need to plan how to divide your time between study commitments, leisure and any other events that take up your time on a regular basis. You have to be very realistic about how long activities take, be that reading a chapter from a text book or researching information on the internet. Plan plenty of breaks because unless you are really good at self-discipline your timetabling and organizational efforts are going to be wasted. So don’t timetable every hour of the day, leave space for leisure or unexpected events. Be flexible – consider timetabling a 2-3 hour block every week to catch up on something not achieved. Know yourself too – when do you work best? Are you a morning lark or a night owl? If you are a morning person schedule the most difficult tasks for first thing in the day. If you can’ t function until mid-afternoon then schedule your most important tasks for that time of day. Create a daily routine and stick to it. Research suggests that a habit takes 30 days to form so give your new routine a chance to work and good working practices will become habit.

Organising

Keep all your papers and files clearly and neatly organized so that you can find references quickly when needed. Again this seems obvious but it will reduce wasted time looking for them. Organised notes are the best way to use study time effectively. Make good use of stationery such as post it notes and index flags to mark important pages in books and journals. Likewise, invest in markers and coloured pens to highlight important points and make your notes more inviting. Organise a dedicated work space in your room or make better use of library facilities.

Wind Street 1940-2023

Ever wondered about the history of Wind Street?

T o walk down Swansea’s Wind Street is to follow a route people have trod for the best part of 1,000 years. These days it may have a reputation for its lively nightlife and a kebab on the way home, but over the centuries the street has had many lives, and has changed as Swansea has changed. When you are on Wind Street, you are in the heart of what Swansea was. The origins of the town are undocumented, though one popular theory holds that it was established as a trading post by the Vikings.
By 1100 a Norman castle had been built at the northern end of Wind Street, roughly where the Castle Buildings - with its mix of cafes, shops and flats - is today, and coins soon started appearing on coins, suggesting their was a mint in the settlement.
By the 1500s Wind Street was also home to a busy weekly market which took place in the area near the castle - it’s likely people would have come from all over Gower and beyond to buy and sell goods, and to meet. Ale houses would have followed.
Into the 18th Century the population of Swansea was likely to be no more than 2,000 souls, but as the settlement became more wealthy so did Wind Street.
The commercial development of Wind Street continued into the 19th Century, and by 1854 five of Swansea’s 12 clock and nautical timepiece-making businesses were located on the street, along with banks, accountants and other services needed to support a busy port town. Businesses such as chemists were also trading on the street - in 1888 records show a pharmacist, J Atkins, selling a “blood purifier” which was claimed to banish the pollutants responsible for cancer, gout, distemper, scrofula and many other ailments. At 2s 6d per bottle, it sounds like quite a bargain. As Swansea grew wealthy on its metal-working industries, banks continued to open there, being joined by hotels - including Metropole and the original Mackworth - and exclusive clubs, and later the town’s head Post Office, which still stands today as the Idols bar.
Into the 1920s and Wind Street was continuing to boom, and by the end of the decade Ben Evans boasted 38 departments providing everything from ladies’ fashions, home furnishings and sporting goods, to a restaurant, and even a funeral services.
Well into the 1990s banks were still a prominent feature of life on the street, but as they closed a new kind of business moved in. It was hoped the street might become a “cafe quarter” for the city, but in the end bars and clubs came to dominate. There is currently talk of pedestrianising the street on a permanent basis to make it more people-friendly.
Wind Street is now part of the “night-time economy” of the city offering everything from kebabs to cocktails, pizzas to pints. And it still attracts people from far and wide, as it has done for hundreds of years.

The History of Swansea University

The University's foundation stone was laid by King George V on 19 July 1920 and 89 students (including eight female students) enrolled that same year. By September 1939, there were 65 staff and 485 students.
In 1947 there were just two permanent buildings on campus: Singleton Abbey and the library. The Principal, J S Fulton, recognised the need to expand the estate and had a vision of a self-contained community, with residential, social and academic facilities on a single site. His vision was to become the first university campus in the UK.
By 1960 a large-scale development programme was underway that would see the construction of new halls of residence, the Maths and Science Tower, and College House (later renamed Fulton House). The 1960s also saw the development of the "finite element method" by Professor Olek Zienkiewicz. His technique revolutionised the design and engineering of manufactured products, and Swansea was starting to stake its claim as an institution that demanded to be taken seriously.
Work began on the student village at Hendrefoelan in 1971, the South Wales Miners' Library was established in 1973 and the Taliesin Arts Centre opened on campus in 1984. The Regional Schools of Nursing transferred to Swansea in 1992, and the College of Medicine opened in 2001. Technium Digital was completed in 2005 and, barely two years later, the University opened its Institute of Life Science , which commercialises the results of research undertaken in the Swansea University Medical School . Work commenced on a second Institute of Life Science in 2009.
In 2012, Swansea began an ambitious campus expansion and development project, including the opening Bay Campus in 2015; which is home to the College of Engineering and the School of Management . In 2018 two further projects developed - The College ; Swansea University's joint venture with Navitas (The International College Wales Swansea, ICWS) and the Computational Foundry ; the home of the College of Science's departments of Computer Science and Mathematics.
Today, there are more than 20,000 students enrolled and the university is ranked in the top 30 in the UK!

Earth Day 2023!

Earth Day is an annual celebration that honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earths natural resources for future generations. Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 across more than 193 countries and on either April 22.
Here at Digs Swansea, for every property that lets we plant a tree. We are also committed to using as many environmentally friendly products when constructing new properties.
What can I do to help on Earth Day?
1) Go for a beach clean.
If you want to help get rid of some of the plastic waste in your area, going on a beach clean is a great and fun way to do this. They happen all year round in most coastal areas and you can sign up easily online, on Facebook or on a website such as Surfers Against Sewage and the Marine Conservation Society. The Great British Beach Clean is an annual event in September happening on many beaches around the UK. In 2017, almost 7,000 people took part and they removed over 250,000 pieces of rubbish from beaches. Maybe this year it can be even bigger!
2) Plant a tree.
Trees and forests are extremely important for providing oxygen, homes, and resources to animals, which includes us. Deforestation contributes to greenhouse gases, with an estimated 15 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions are due the cutting down of trees.
If you want to help make your area a bit greener and help reduce deforestation and climate change; plant a tree or even a forest! You can buy saplings from garden centres or order them online from the Woodland Trust. Either buy a single sapling, or a tree pack, which contains up to 210 trees. You can even apply for free trees for your school or local community.
3) Buy a bag for life.
As a species, we love eating meat, especially in the West, but this is putting a great pressure on this industry. As well as potential animal welfare issues from intensive farming, the environmental damage animal products create is also a massive issue. Beef in particular uses up a lot of land, a lot of water, and produces many greenhouse gases. If you are a meat eater, cutting down on the amount you eat will have a beneficial impact on the environment. You could start small and go meat free for one day a week (it’ll even save you money, or even try go vegetarian. You never know, you might love it.
4) Go micro-bead free.
Microbeads are tiny beads of plastic that are in many cosmetic products, such as face washes and toothpaste. They end up being washed down your sink into the ocean and can enter the food chain when marine animals consume them. Fortunately, a ban this year means that micorbeads can no longer be used in cosmetic products. However, this does not cover ‘leave-on’ products such as make up. So, make sure the next time you buy any cosmetic products, check the label first for the ingredients list.
5) Walk or ride a bike.
Cars contribute greatly to air pollution, climate change, and have a negative impact on human health. They produce dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, which then enter our atmosphere that we have to breath in.
Rather than taking your car, try to walk or ride a bike instead. This is also good exercise contributing to a healthy lifestyle. If you don’t have a bicycle, then even carpooling with others will help cut down your carbon footprint.
6) Give up chewing gum.
You might think that chewing gum is environmentally friendly, but it is actually made from a synthetic rubber, which is plastic. Around 100,000 tonnes of this plastic is thrown away every year, and a lot of it ends up on our streets. Next time you want minty-fresh breath, just brush your teeth rather than chewing on a piece of plastic.
7) Shop at local farmers markets.
Farmers markets are a great way to get fresh produce and are beneficial in many ways. Firstly, they support local businesses encouraging positive growth in your area. They also tend to use a lot less, or even no plastic packaging compared to supermarkets, so help reduce waste. Finally, the products are grown or made locally so transport distances are very short and CO2 emissions are low.
Supermarkets on the other hand transport food over thousands of miles from different countries. If there isn’t a farmers market near you, then try to buy grocery products that are from the UK and organic.
8) Buy a reusable water bottle.
In 2016, over 480 billion plastic bottles were sold, which is over 60 for every person. If everyone had a reusable water bottle, then this number would decrease greatly. If you don’t already own one, then go out and buy a bottle that you can take with you everywhere you go.
Cutting down on single-use plastic bottles also means drinking less juices and fizzy drinks, good for your health as they contain a lot of sugar and sometimes weird chemicals. If they are in a glass bottle, then this is a better option to reduce plastic waste.
9) Stop using plastic straws.
Plastic straws contribute greatly to the plastic waste in our oceans. The next time you go to a bar or restaurant, make sure say no to a straw, and even encourage them to stop using straws completely. If you have to use one, then buy an environmentally friendly one that is reusable. You can buy bamboo, metal, and glass straws online that you can wash and use rather than always buying plastic ones.
10) Switch your bills to paperless.
Rather than being sent your monthly bills by post, switch to online statements to reduce paper waste. It’s really easy to do and you are sent an email when your bills are available online to view. Decreasing the demand for paper will hopefully decrease the rate of deforestation.
11) Spread the word!
The more people who know about Earth Day and your efforts to help reduce environmental damage, the faster important issues such as plastic pollution will be resolved.

Happy Easter Everyone! Easter is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the world. Easter is a Christian festival and marks the end of Lent and the resurrection of Jesus Christ!
Here are some fun Easter facts:
1) Easter is named after Eostre who was an Anglo-Saxon Goddess. She was the Goddess of Fertility and also Dawn and Light.
2) The first ever Easter egg was made in the UK! We should be really proud as the first ever Easter egg was invented in the UK. It was made in Bristol in 1873 by Fry's Chocolate Company.
3) The most expensive ever Easter egg cost £7,000 The expensive egg sold in London on 20th March 2012. It was so expensive, it became the world record for the most expensive edible egg! The egg was decorated with gold leaf and white flowers; it took three days to make!
4) Back in the medieval times, it was believed that if you wear new clothes it would bring you good luck. Luckily we don’t really think that any more, so we can stick to our favourite jumper!
5) Easter is a Christian festival to signify new life. That’s why you see lots of eggs (because chicks hatch out of them) and also loads of Easter bunnies! Rabbits give birth to lots of babies (known as kittens) and so they are a great example of new life.
6) During Easter, lots of Easter eggs are given to family and friends to celebrate.A huge 80 million Easter eggs are sold in the UK each year.
7) According to the Guinness World Records, the largest ever Easter egg hunt was held in Florida. There were 9,753 children who took part in the hunt as there were lots of eggs to find. The children had to find a total of 501,000 eggs!
8) In medieval times, a priest would throw a hard boiled egg to the choir boys in the church. They would keep throwing it around and as soon as the clock hit 12 o’clock, whoever had the egg could keep it.

Student Finance for the 2023/24 Academic Year

Everything you need to know about student finance for the 2023/24 Academic Year!
Who is eligible for student finance?
Most students in the UK receive student loans provided by the government to help pay their tuition fees and assist with their living costs at university.
There are two different types of student loan, a tuition fee loan which covers your tuition fees and a maintenance loan which helps with the cost of living whilst at university.
If you’re a UK citizen and have lived here for at least three years, you may be eligible for financial support from the government. Although, there are a few things which affect whether you can receive student finance:

Your nationality or residency status
You must be studying a higher education course for the first time
The course and university you are studying at
Your age

Once you complete the application form, the student finance company for the country you live in will let you know if you’re eligible.
Applying for student finance
From early 2023, to apply online you can go to the gov.uk website and register. The website offers an easy step-by-step guide to completing the application form for student finance.
For those going to university for the first time, applications for full-time undergraduate courses are expected to open in March 2023. Whilst applications for part-time undergraduate courses and postgraduate courses are set to open later in 2023.
So, keep your eyes peeled on the Student Finance social media channels and check your emails. Depending on which country you live in, you will have to apply differently.
Student Finance England - For first-time undergraduate students from England, you can register and apply online for student finance through the Student Finance England website. On the Student Finance England website you are able to track your application, check your student finance payment dates as well as make any necessary changes to your details or information.
Student Finance Wales - If you live in Wales and are applying for the first time for undergraduate funding, you will need to apply for student finance on the Student Finance Wales website. You will be able to track your application, check your student finance payment dates as well as make any changes to your details or information.
Student Finance Scotland - If you are a new full-time undergraduate student from Scotland, applying for student finance is done directly through the Student Awards Agency Scotland . You will be able to track your application, check your student finance payment dates and make changes to your details or information online once applications open.
Student Finance Northern Ireland - First-time undergraduate students from Northern Ireland will be able to apply for student finance funding from early 2023. You will need to apply for student finance through Student Finance NI . You will then be able to track your application, check your student finance payment dates and make changes to your details or information online when applications open.
International Students - You may be able to get a Tuition Fee Loan and support with living costs from the UK government if you’re from an EU country , or Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Check the gov.uk website for more information on student finance for international students.
Continuing Students:
If you’re a continuing student who’s moving on to the next year of your course, repeating a year of your course, returning to a course or even transferring onto a new course, you will need to re-apply for student finance every year. Student Finance will contact you directly to let you know when you can re-apply as a continuing full time student or part time student. So, make sure to check your emails to find out when applications are open. Or, check the Student Finance website or social media channels for the country you’re from!
Tips for applying
Now you know when the applications are opening for student finance 2023, we have a few tips listed in our next section to help you out with the process.
1 - It’s important to apply for student finance at the earliest opportunity when the applications open for the academic year 2023/2024 to ensure that your funding is in place for the start of your course date. You don’t want to leave it too late as this could delay when you receive your maintenance loan. Plus, it’s just better to get it over and done with – it mean’s less stress for you!
2 - You don’t need a confirmed place at university to apply for student finance funding. When applying for student finance, you should use your first choice university. If this changes at a later date or you don’t meet the requirements for a conditional place, it can be changed online.
3 - It’s important to make sure you have all the necessary documents and information ready.
You will need to include your parents income for the means tested maintenance loan if you’re financially dependent. Your parent(s) will then be asked to confirm these details for your maintenance loan entitlement.
So, it’s best to plan a time with your parents or guardians to go through the application together.
You will also have to send in proof of identity through a form of identification such as your passport.

4 - If you’re an independent student who hasn’t relied on their family financially for at least 3 years, you won’t need to send your parent’s financial information for your application. For those who have married or are in a civil partnership before the start of their course, you won’t need to do this either.
5 - Before you’ve started your application for student finance 2023, we’d recommend setting up a student bank account. Any maintenance loan, grants, bursaries or scholarships you will receive will be paid directly into the bank account you’ve listed on your student loan application form. So, it’s a good idea to set up your student bank account beforehand.
6 - When applying for student finance, it’s important to double check that the information and full details you’ve inputted are correct.To avoid changing your application due to mistakes, we’d suggest having a family member or close friend check over it. Should you need to, you are able to make necessary changes to your application at a later date. However, it may delay when you receive payments at the beginning of the academic year. Don’t worry if your plans change before going to university, you can amend or cancel your funding application. You can do this through your relevant student finance website.

What is International Women's Day?

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. International Women's Day has occurred for well over a century, with the first gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people.
The purpose of the International Women's Day website is to support the supporters, and to encourage worldwide engagement and collective action in advancing women's equality. I Everyone everywhere can help forge women's equality. Collective action and collaborative support for forging women's equality matters, and all groups should be welcome to advance women's equality by whatever apporpriate means they choose.
Marked annually on March 8th, International Women's Day (IWD) is one of the most important days of the year to:

Call for positive change advancing women
