1. The great kitchen juggle We like to call it “kitchen tetris,” and if you’ve ever tried to fit your week’s food shop into a single cupboard and fridge shelf, you’ll know exactly what we mean. In any shared house, kitchen storage is a rare and valuable commodity. Sometimes, the only solution is to play an endless game of reorganising your groceries, or reluctantly eat that yogurt just to free up some space! 2. Bedroom pantry While most of your food will live in the kitchen, there’s always a special stash that’s too precious to risk leaving out in the open. Maybe it’s your favourite tea bags, an indulgent bottle of wine, or even a humble bottle of ketchup. Whatever it is, keeping it safe in your bedroom becomes second nature when you’ve experienced the heartbreak of coming home to find your favourite snacks mysteriously “borrowed.” 3. Zero boundaries Living with housemates has a way of breaking down any sense of personal space. Over time, nothing really shocks you anymore, awkward moments just become part of the routine. From offering advice on personal dilemmas to sharing every detail of your life, your housemates become your unfiltered support system. Just remember to shut the bathroom door when visitors are over! 4. The neglected zone Every student house has that area, the spot everyone avoids tackling. It might be the sink overflowing with dishes, a jungle of weeds in the garden, or a bathroom teetering on the edge of disaster. If you can’t think of one, it’s probably because the whole house has fallen into “that” category! 5. The never ending group chat The house WhatsApp group is the lifeline of communication, or, more realistically, the place where memes, gossip, and random observations reign supreme. Blink, and you’ll have missed 50+ messages. Among the chaos, there’s usually one important message buried somewhere about rent payments, chores, or bin day. 6. The bin standoff Ah, the overflowing bin: the nemesis of every student house. Forget exam stress or a looming deadline; the real challenge is figuring out who’s responsible for taking out the trash. Bin day is the ultimate test of teamwork, and when you forget to put it out, you’ll quickly realise just how important it really is; especially in a house of six or seven people! From shared laughs to minor housemate squabbles, these moments are all part of the student living experience.
